IRCTC Chart Vacancy – Find Vacant Train Berths

IRCTC chart vacancy refers to the berths and seats that remain unsold or get freed up once the railway reservation chart is prepared. After chart preparation, cancellations, no-shows and partial-journey bookings can leave berths vacant for all or part of a route. RailBerth reads the publicly available reservation chart and shows you exactly which berths are vacant, coach by coach.

What does chart vacancy mean?

When you book a train ticket, the seat allotment is finalised in a document called the reservation chart. Chart vacancy is the list of berths that are still empty in that chart. A berth can be vacant because nobody booked it, because the original passenger cancelled, or because it is only booked for a segment of the journey and is free before or after that segment.

What happens after chart preparation?

The first reservation chart is usually prepared a few hours before the train departs from its origin, and a second chart is prepared later for downstream stations. Once the chart is ready, waiting-list movement stops for that leg and the real vacancy becomes visible. This is the moment vacant-berth data is most accurate, and the best time to look for a berth you can board with — either through current booking at the counter or the IRCTC current-booking window where available.

Fully vacant vs partially available berths

A fully vacant berth is empty for your entire journey between boarding and destination. A partially available berth is free for only part of the route — for example, vacant from your boarding station up to a station where another passenger has booked it. RailBerth shows the exact station-to-station segments each berth is available for, so you can tell at a glance whether a berth covers your whole trip.

How RailBerth helps you find vacant berths

Enter a train number, journey date and boarding station on the RailBerth home page. RailBerth loads the chart and lists each coach with its vacancy count. Select a coach to see fully vacant and partially available berths, berth by berth, with the segments they are free for. You can also ask the built-in assistant questions like “show vacant lower berths” in plain language.
